Learning IMAGE STRUCTURE will change how you see, how you paint, and how people respond to your work. It's changed me as an artist, and I'm seeing it help many other artists grow faster than they thought possible.

WORKING IN SERIES
w/ David Michael Slonim
March 4-8, 2024 in person
Scottsdale, AZ
All Levels 9am - 4pm I 5 Days

Should you work in series? The masters have left an unmistakable and resounding answer:

YES!

Serious artists want to grow AND they want to connect with an audience. Working in series meets both needs at once; authentic artistic expression AND good marketing.

Here's why:

1)  A cohesive body of work develops your creativity.

  • Painting is the exploration of visual questions. As each painting gives rise to new questions, you grow artistically as you create a cohesive body of work.

2)  A coherent story is the secret to effective marketing.

  • Marketing is telling a coherent story over time. A series enables you to tell a coherent story.

This is why master artists have always worked in series. (Think of Degas, Monet, Agnes Martin, Joan MItchell, Josef Albers, Per Kirkeby, Diebenkorn, Joan MIro, Cezanne, etc.).

Finding your unique voice will happen faster, and galleries will be more likely to take notice.

David will coach you through the development of a painting series of your own. We will discuss how to set up visual problems, how to ask the right questions, and how to fully unleash your native curiosity and creative gift.

Are you ready to develop a series of paintings instead of one-offs? Join us for a fun, uplifting, and encouraging workshop where risk-taking is celebrated, genuine discovery is the target, and your unique voice is the focus.

UNSURE whether my workshops are right for you?  Feel free to email questions:  slonimdavid@gmail.com.

Common Questions:

Q:  Can I paint in acrylics or watercolor?

A:  Yes!  The only restriction, for health reasons, is no pastels.  I wil be painting and demonstrating in oils. (solvent-free! I'll show you how to paint and clean up without destroying brain cells, getting depressed, or developing cancer from paint thinners).

Q:  What if I don't want to paint abstracts?

A:  No problem!  I teach principles of visual communication that apply to any style or genre.

We'll look at master slides by artists like Wyeth, Degas, Rembrandt, Mitchell, Velasquez, Frakenthaler, Sargent, Sorolla, Cassatt, Cezanne, Vermeer, and many others.  This workshop is for every painter.

Q:  I don't enjoy laughing, good music, or being creatively inspired in a group of like-minded art friends.  Is this the right workshop for me?

A:  Sorry, but no!  This is going to be a fun, upbeat, and energizing week designed to refresh you.

:o)

“The strength of the design and composition in these classes has not been equaled or even approached in other classes and workshops I’ve taken.” – G.H.

Image structure topics include:

SPACE STRUCTURE

Good paintings have good bones--a clear and compelling organization of space.

VALUE STRUCTURE

Paintings that move us distribute light and dark to convey feeling.

COLOR STRUCTURE

Good painters, like musicians, create color harmonies intentionally, resolving tension with unity.
